ok i have to say one more thing about the game, then i'm done. the single most annoying thing in Civ 4 is that as soon as a civilization comes in catact with yours, they'll ask you if you want open borders every two fuckin turns unless you go to war with them.

Well why not just accept the deal? Am I doing something wrong? COULD OPEN BORDERS BE THE REASON I KEEP LOSING?!!!111

if you decline open borders then they obviously can't step into your borders. so then it's possible to build cities in the right places so your borders close off the space the enemy can travel through. this prevents them from building in the middle of your area where there's a space not taken by your borders. it keeps you in control of certain areas if you deny them open borders.
