I've always liked the idea of being able to switch classes while still being able to retain the current level/skill points.

Say if you have a ranger with these many skills and want to be a mage, you wouldn't have to start all over and waste your time. You'd be able to switch to mage with all your stats and skill points in a pot to redistribute as seen fit.

I don't know why games haven't done that yet...I'm guessing that may make it too easy? If that's a case...perhaps a money/item system can be created where if you collect a certain amount of items or pay a certain amount you can switch classes. It sure saves the time to restart a new character at level 0.

Hope that made sense and good luck on your game!

Edit: By the way...I just read how your game isn't fantasy. My examples used fantasy classes, but it applies generally too.

I'd also like to add...a necromancy class/necromancer talents would be awesome. I don't play many MMORPGs, but from the ones I have played, I haven't seen any Necromancers. The only ones I remember were from Diablo 2 and that's not really an MMORPG. Raising the dead to fight for you? That's always cool.

a modern day Assassin's Creed. the players would all try to assassinate each other by out smarting each other.

here's an example of how i see it playing out.

assassinations cost money. you gotta pay for the weapons don't you? can't keep using the same weapon weapon every time cause you'll get figured out. so you get a job. some fast food joint. on your way to work, somebody is watching you. hiding in the bushes or something. they watch you to see where you work, when you work, which way you go to work, etc... so one day while you're away, the person watching you plants a bomb in your car. this can trigger a mini-game for this person, where you have to match the right wires in a set time or the bomb doesn't work. you can get better bombs to increase effectiveness but that will also increase the complexity of the wiring. you get back to your car, start it and boom you're dead.

what you can do is create a bunch of default NPC's when the game is first started so that real people will fill the world as the NPC's get killed so that eventually the world is nothing but players. as for the RPG aspect....

successfully planting a bomb, successfully killing the target, aiding somebody in their own plan, gathering information about your target (via asking the other players if they know anything about the target) etc... will all give you experience as an assassin. then you can upgrade your techniques. like your bomb wiring, the more highly skilled you are means that you can wire better bombs as easily as you could with the lesser bombs. increasing your knifing techniques so you target specific areas of the body so that while you wait for your target to come around the corner, you tell your guy to run up behind him as he passes by via pressing buttons at the correct time and stab him in the neck for a swifter kill rather than being less skilled and only being able to burst out and randomly stab him. which would put you at risk to getting yourself killed.

for the items you can have your typical guns, knives, explosives, maybe even materials to build your own explosives. but you can also have different quality weapons. like a hand me down pistol from somebody else who has played a while and used that gun alot so it's worn and jams alot. or starting out as only being able to afford a butter knife. then stumbling upon some scissors so you can have a more gruesome kill (earning you even more experience for a more complex assassination).

i could keep going but this post is long enough :sweating:

@ Hadez

Your idea is really good and innovative. It's never been done before as far as I know...but I do see potential problems/hurdles. Unlike most MMORPGs your idea focuses around PVP? If a group of players become too strong wouldn't they easily be able to destroy the noobs? And you can't really tell them not to pk because...that's what the game is about?

Also what about players who die? How would they come back to life? Would they get punished for dying or would the assassin be rewarded or both? If the punishment is too lenient..it wouldn't be fun because you can just respawn and be back in the game. But if the punishment is too harsh the noobs would probably be frustrated when the pro players kill them repeatedly. Does that make sense?

I'm not saying your idea is bad...I think it's great. But there are inherent problems to a game designed around PVP and that has to addressed.

^^^ i thought about people being too strong and killing everyone. i didn't mention it because i didn't have a solution. i like the idea but it's not a good idea for an MMO. about dying, you would start as nothing again. you'd create a new guy from scratch and start at the bottom again. so it'd be an extremely strategic game that you couldn't just flail in and kill somebody.

so maybe perhaps as a console game instead of an MMO. where you could upload other player's characters into your world and killing them would only affect YOUR game, not theirs.

Sorry if I'm misunderstanding anything but in a game where you're an assassin trying to kill other players, how can you have non pvp servers/option? They wouldn't have anything to do.

Ah I get what you mean with the missions now. Just make sure if you go this route to have enough NPCs in game for every player to have a mission to go on. Some MMORPGS I've played had me kill a monster for a certain quest, but it turned out really hard because so many people would kill them before me and the respawn would be too slow. Of course this wouldn't be an issue in a regular RPG but I'd just like to point out in an MMO there would be competition from other players as well.

I'd suggest including a really crowded location (i.e. mall or shopping center) as a newbie training grounds where there are a ton of NPCs and each one can be a potential victim for a newbie to assassinate and level up. And the crowd can always respawn by having more shoppers enter the area (that makes sense right?).

^^ i was thinking of a mall area as well when i typed my first post. but i never thought of a "training grounds" kind of thing. that's a good idea.
