W-RPG or J-RPG

Postby ,-,'-{Bar}-',-, » Mar 24th, '08, 01:15

incase you dont know

W-RPG - Western rpg, this is the likes of Obvlivion

J-RPG - Japan(or japanese) rpg , this is the likes of Dragon Quest

i prefer J-RPG, even though they are some times a bit over the top and other times oddly erotic (dragon quest girls always have big tits that defy the laws of gravity :p lol ) , i enjoy and play more of them, the main difference for me is coz w-rpg's are always HUGE i mean massive, ill use oblivion for the best example, 150+ hours playing time now some would say that a good thing, i on the other hand disagree, any game that ive put ten hours into and feel as if ive accomplished nothing, sucks, and its not that its too hard, its just too much. As in j-rpg's on average have about 50-70 hours playing time, and to fufill all them hours you got to complete the main quest and the multiple side quest ect.

also the storys, w-rpg's never focus on the main story and always focus on the free-roam "do what you want" aspect of the game, witch again is kool but its not gripping enough for me, i like storylines, twists, live story's, betrayals ect. in my rpg's since your suppose to be role playing, i like to have more focus on the characters than on the 30,000 acre forest that has 3 monsters to fight (again oblivion lol)

i also prefer the battle systems commonly used in J-rpgs as they are more strategic then any w-rpg ive played.

not that w-rpg are bad, hell obvlivion is a gaming masterpeice and i enjoyed the 30 hours i put in to it before chucking it, i just prefer J-rpg's lol

You are the new forum bitch *hands you the Bitch Award and the bitch sash*

J-RPG's are the greatest, just think of all the great games that have came from Japan. W=RPG has The Elder Scroll Series, Great damn series but doesn't compare to the Final Fantasy, Dragonquest, Chrono Trigger, and so on

chrono trigger can suck my fat dick :tounge2:

seriously, ive been seriously pissed off at that game since i was like 13, why the fuck hasnt it been expanded on ? ok there was crono cross and that was another awesome games (the battle system was sex, the story was sex, the characters were sex the whole game was awesome) but i swear, square-enix have just ignored it completely, it baffles me why it hasnt been expanded on, the 2 games chrono trigger and crono cross even though they arent direct sequals or anything, they have similiarities (with the many multi endings traveeling bewtween different time zones and stuff) and i hold those 2 games in as high a regard as i do final fantasy or dragon quest..and it pisses me off that they are forgetton and probly wont get re-makes nor will the title/concept be brought forward...*ends rant*

anywae, they really do need to re-make chrono trigger, i mean i can still play and love that game to this day and it was released on the snes lol, it isnt even in the Wii Virtual Console yet another thing that pisses me off about the game :p

I think your mean that square sucks

lol nah, sqaure = awesome

enix = assholes

enix have good games, yeh, but there influence on square games have done nothing but make them worse, FF10 was awesome, enix got involved and FF10-2 sucked...and since then there hasnt be a truly awesome Final Fantasy, 12 was kool, but the battle system was alien for a final fantasy game, the story was far to Political, the character were nothign special and the level/equipment/money grind was extremely extremely tough and that fact the battle system wasnt fun didnt help, plus (if you played it) what was up with the randomly over-powered monsters, like you goin along nicely killing some wolves and a fucking T-rex pops out of no-were and kills you and youve lost the last 2 hours you spent grinding lol..i could go on forever coz i fucking hate that game...

but dragon quest has came along good since the went together :smoking:

I just haven't liked all the new rpg's, they keep changing the battle system...DAMNIT I LIKE TURNED BASED COMBAT

yeh kingdom hearts is awesome, its like a secret sin :p coz i mean i never thought id enjoy a game that has mickey mouse in it  but yeh kingdom hearts is great and probly the best thing that came out of square enix.

and i agree with ya, turn based battles were alot better than all these expirements company's are doin, i mean its getting to the point supposed rpg games come out and they are like hack n slash games or action games, i understand why companies may feel as if sticking to turn based battles isnt moving forward but they should just invent new turn based styles, like if you every played any of the shadow hearts game there judgement ring system is awesome :smoking:

McMaybe wrote:This argument is pointless. W-Rpgs are better on one side because they are massive *witcher, oblivion* but J-Rpgs have a better story.

I disagree with you about how all W-Rpgs lack story though, Oblivions main story was amazing. If you finished the main quest, which is also only about 50/70 hours, you would see how awesome it truly is. The game itself is huge, but it doesnt require you to do anything but the main quest, so if you wanted, you could forget everything and just do that.

I prefer W because i like freedom and free roam games in general. But J are just as good, and better in some aspects... the big eyes and exaggerated bodies do get old at times though. I like realism.

well, obvlivions main story was kool (what i expirenced of it) but the fact i didnt feel the need to sit play through it all is why i dont rate it, i think its depends on the gamer because of the amount of freedom, like i found the Arena and wanted to go through those ranks and complete that without having to do anything else, but you quickly find out you need to level grind to do the arena and to level grind you got to do side quests and to find sidequests that actually make you go somewere to fight isnt that easy, you can just randomly go in caves but i noticed that can hinder sidequests you have yet discovered witch bugged me and made me feel like i had to go through everything with alot of care.

as in a J-rpg, when you come into that sort of situation, side quests are generaly only active after you speak to the person meaning there;s no way to go in a cave and kill the prey that if you had talked to the guy in the pub would have been worth money and stuff...and also randomg battles and and leveling up is more to my taste lol

oh and the debate isnt pointless, if youve noticed Square enix and making a massive push to get the J-rpgs big names in the west and there even putting elements from W-rpg's into there games, basically they are tyring to find the balance that will make a game massive to both sets of fans...so my curiosity of peoples opinions on these to different types of games was why i made the topic lol

honestly i like both genre's. both have good qualities. the Japanese ones for their stories and the Western ones for the "do whatever the fuck i want" ability.

but while we're on the subject of RPG's, anybody play Lost Odyssey? i want to know if it's good.

is it just me or is just holding R1 an attack ?

please dont even start trying to simplify games coz its really stupid, ever single action in a computer games is "just a push, just a click" , your come back for a game like gta would be Aiming/reloding/choice of gun/angle you attack at/waiting for the right moment to pull the trigger, my come back would be using the correct attack/conserving hp/conseving mp/tactically chossing what to do with 3-5 different character with completely different attributes/finding out elemntal weakness's and exploiting them/level grinding to be strong enough in the first place/status elements

so its really pointless, both the battle systems are just as complex and simple as each other

I agree. In oblivion you "just click" to attack, but theres enchanting your weapon with certain powers, or poisons to cause more damage, theres sneaking without being detected to cause critical damage, theres conserving fatigue so you can cause more damage, etc... i could go on...

About J-rpg's.. games like fire emblem also seem simple, but theres always choices that can bring a loss. Final fantasy is the perfect example... *loved FF Tactics lol

like i said, simplyfing is stupid coz you pruposely mention those about oblivion but dont mention them about others

Poison
Paralyzed
confusion ect.

all in turn based rpg's

enchanted weapons are in there to, elemental weopons are in there aswell, both sets of games and system are like i said, as simple and complex as each other just in different ways.

and fire emblems battle system is simple, but if your gonni tell me youve played fire emblems and find them un-challenging id say your lyring coz when it comes to strategy games fire emblem is one of the best around, lots of other things suck about the game and personely i dont rate it to highly coz its basically read text-battle-read text-battle-buy stuff-battle-battle thats the 3 things you can do in the game lol but its good at what it does lol
