Video game pet-peeves

Postby Hadez » Sep 3rd, '08, 03:26

list all the small things that tick you off in video games.

mine:

1. inconsistency.
2. invisible wall barriers. i hate when you can see clear out into the field but get stopped by the invisible wall.
3. repeated item designs. i can't stand it when a game claims to have a huge mass of items, but out of the 200 swords or whatever, there are only 5 different models for them. they just rename them.
4. games that have online multiplayer as their only highlight. constantly in reviews i see "the one player mode sucks ass but the online multiplayer is amazing! which makes this game an 8/10!" that's bullshit. if i can't enjoy the game by myself then i don't want to play it.
5. when modern RPG's don't show your new equpiment. you have the same outfit the whole game regardless of what armor you're wearing.

i could list more but i have to think of them :sweating:

Invisible barriers I can understand, its better than having a big black wall no?

Everything else is true.... even huge games like Oblivion have 500 weapons, but all recycled with a different texture for example: (Iron, glass, silver, elven).

BUT, Fallout looks amazing, for gods sake you can addicted to pills, thats fucking crazy.

what i like about Fallout over Oblivion is that in Oblivion when you look out in the distance the landscape looks like shit till you get near it. but in the clips you posted of Fallout it looks like that doesn't happen.

I think most games over 60 hours are RPGs. There are great games that are under 60 hours that I have enjoyed. Bioshock is a great example. I beat it in around 20-ish hours (and I've read that completing it 100% takes about 40-50 hours). Sometimes a long game can be bad too since it's just recycled levels/enemies that look the same but have different colors/etc (kind of like the items). Devil May Cry 2 is a great example of where you play the same levels basically twice to extend the play time (although it was still a ridiculously short game).

The next in the series sounds horrible...last I read it was set to be a MMO :(

I hope I'm wrong

Games that put all importance on graphics or violence, neglecting the idea of playability.
Shooter after shooter that are all identical
The Wii's online play
And like Hadez said, invisible walls

Missions and quests which are basically the same or related to the same thing over and over again.
e.g Silkroad or Crackdown

Games which add on online just to have but not much effort has been put into it.
e.g Timeshift

Games with an extremely long or boring tutorial.
e.g Ghost Recon: Advanced War Fighter 2

Games with A.I's who turn around when behind when you haven't made a sound like if they had a HUD.
e.g Battlefield: Bad Company

I could of made more examples but I couldn't come up with more during my precious time of thinking.
Most of the ones other people have said I agree with. I might come up with more later.

- new games having text only, or even parts being text only, i want everything spoke out to me..lazy ? no, think of a movie and at certain parts they dont talk and text just comes up, it breaks up rythm imo.

- games without statistic keeping, byt this i mean how many kills youve had ect. every game should have this its a simple system that is great to check out and compare

-Mini game based/multiplayer based games, all of them in general i hate them, not because they suck and not because none of my freinds are intrested in them, but because they get sold at full price, to be fair wario ware is good fun but its far far far too simple and short to be sold at full price and it annoys me when i see people pay £40 for a game thats consists of cheap and chearful min games in colourful packaging.

-AtoB mission - you know those misions were you go to sam and get a apple take an apple to bob who gives you an orange to take back to sam who gives you the bannana for bob who trades you for the key to the door, and sam and bob are on oppisate sides of the town...its worse when you get these missions in rpgs that have night and day, and bob goes to sleep at 7 so tis like 6:59 and your sprinting tryna give him this bannana...its fucking pointless and been over done in ever game ever made in excistence.

- Recycled missions, i hate them in genneral but games like crackdown or assasians creed were its basically and 3 step mission 10 times witch different settings and people, but its the same shit over and over

i could go on forever but ill stop now
