Gervais' Superb 'Extras' Finale Speech...

Postby EminemBase » Jun 27th, '10, 10:08

For anyone who doesn't know who Ricky Gervais is, he's a comedian who was the co-creator, co-director and star of the original The Office and then Extras which was aired on BBC and HBO.

Regardless of whether you like, love, hate or don't know anything about him - I urge you to check out this 'speech' of sorts if you haven't seen it.

Extras Xmas Finale Speech on Fame

Basically, in the sitcom his character is a struggling actor just trying to get a break... The whole series is basically a satire on fame (whilst at the same time being about relationships) and how shallow and pointless it is as an aim in itself.

That speech sums it up. By this point in the series, his character had achieved some notoriety but had essentially sold-out to do it and here he's in Celebrity Big Brother. He has a sudden flash of self-awareness... Not that he isn't self-aware anyway but he really boils over then delivers this.

It's wonderfully written and acted by Gervais. It's like a little piece of power poetry slanting fame and all of the embarrassing, low-life nonsense it entails and embodies with it. I used to get a little chocked up every time I watched it. Great speech.

Don't have time to watch it but I assume your talking about the big brother scence, if it is then I agree, a great moment in british television, unfortunately i always feel that Extras get's overshadowed by The Office don't you ?

For me Gervais is the greatest at performing ironic and somewhat embarrassing roles, almost every scene in the office was cringe worthy ( but in a good way )

IMO gervais > cleese

Even though Gervais clearly draws inspiration from him.
