I kinda skimmed but NO ONE MENTIONED the shawshank redemption
The Shawshank Redemption I feel is def one everyone must see, I've never met anyone who hasn't loved it, and I think most people who see it put in their top 5. I have worked with random people and I clearly remember whenever movies were brought up, guy or girl, the majority said their favorite was this film, just saying
So kind of in order, more so for probably the first 5, but I'm going by what people should see versus my favorites I guess:
1. The Shawshank Redemption-drama, some funny parts though, sad parts...overall a great movie about friendship and hope
2. Saving Private Ryan-the best war movie imo...very sad, very historically accurate...just a movie to see where you can really see how terrible WWII was and all wars for that matter
3. Stand By Me-good movie about growing up, learning things, experience difficulties...and this was also written by stephen king (as was Shawshank)
4. Superbad- typical "trying to get laid before high school ends" film, but done very accurate to how kids are and act nowadays. obviously hilarious, but good again for it's realistic qualities.
5. Fight Club- great movie if you pay attention to the plot in terms of why they say mostly but also what they do, and how this relates to people in society/how we view money/possesions/etc.
6. The Dark Knight-obviously heath ledger was amazing, but the plot is great, shows a lot real life situations and how people deal with them but in a fantasy/comic book setting and plot.
7. The Hurt Locker- As amazing as Saving Private Ryan in terms of in your face realism when it comes to war, but in the wars fought today. I saw this at home my first time, and I was nervous and on the edge of my seat the entire film. No other movie has had that impact.
8. Fargo- Great movie in terms of showing how far people go for money, and when things go wrong, how people will kill to protect themselves and the money. Kind of bloody but had great acting as well.
9. Zodiac- There's a few, but the recent one with Jake Gyllenhol. One of my personal favorites, but if you love true crime and/or mystery, I suggest this! And from doing years of research myself, I can honestly say this movie is 100% accurate, and so much so that actual things used by Robert Graysmith were used in the film by Jake G, and even minute details down to how many shirts one kid wore in the events were used as well. This film should make you want to research the case more it is that good.
10. 8 Mile-I don't even need to explain, but for what it is, a great film about struggling to be the best at something you're not supposed to be good at or even involved with...and damn that ending
