I've seen a couple of his older movies which were pretty generic and he wasn't necessarily impressive, but I can't comment on the entire scope of his career. He was great in his 2012 movies though so I think that was his breakout year. I wouldn't call him top tier but he's definitely coming into his own. I haven't seen Dallas Buyers Club but apparently he's great in that too.
