There actually lots of threads like this. I remember doing this already. Just not with 50 , that's way too much. And I think people here for the most part are too young to make a list of 50 great movies.

I'll mention a few...

-Before Sunrise.

- Bram Stoker Dracula

- The green mile

- Requiem for a dream (I can't see it much though, it kills me, same for The Green mile.)

-Pulp fiction.

-the silence of the lambs

- Edward Scissorhands

- into the wild

- Amelie

-Jaws ( I love them all, watch them every summer :8) )

- encounters of the Third Kind (my freak side)

- Forrest Gump

- The lion king

- the fight club

- Legends of the fall (yeah, don't judge me)

-Thelma and Louis

- Reality bites

-Interview with the Vampire

- Trainspotting

- kill bill

- Dirty dancing. :toocool:

- Dead Poets Society

To mention some , I'm missing a lot......

Calandre wrote:I've seen some of you are putting The Matrix, The Godfather, Lord of Rings...

Are you talking only about the first one of the trilogy or the whole trilogy?

I think you should clarify this - for me, The Godfather II ranks higher than The Godfather. And The Godfather III will not make it into the shortlist. The same goes for The Matrix.

I'll post mine next week.

Everybody mentions The Godfather in these kind of lists...I watched one, with all the illusion, and I was like...Ok, so this is It? To me one of the most overrated sagas ever.
Never watched The Matrix, don't know why.

c'mon son....

:coffee:

??????

does rotten tomatoes dictate what's good? hey let's look at the rt score for the kings speech. oh look lel 94% plus, a lot of great movies received polarized reactions when first released. look at 2001: a space odyssey (i'm not comparing the films, 2001 is arguably the best film ever made).

i think spring breakers will be re-visited and evaluated like a lot of great films and the response will be much more favorable.

Aone10 wrote:I actually enjoyed watching Spring Breakers, but to say that it's much better than Fight Club is just laughable.

why? it isn't a film you can just watch once and dismiss.

Aone10 wrote:And yes, I'd say RT is trustworthy for the fact that they give you both the overall score from critics and the overall score from audiences, but never has it stopped me from watching something I want to watch.

so you're just going to ignore everything i said about it? aggregated review sites are reliable for showing a general consensus (based on a small sample, of course) but when did we start blindly agreeing with the consensus to the point where we site rotten tomatoes as an argument for the quality of a film? and plus, like i said, the rt score for spring breakers shows that it was polarizing apon release, like a lot of great films were.

and looking at the film and its nature it would be bizarre if it were any different. look at how it's been perceived on a surface level lol.

Aone10 wrote:At the end of the day, it's all your subjective opinion, but one thing that can be judged are such things as screenplay, acting, and cinematography.... all areas in which Fight Club absolutely shits on Spring Breakers.

so.. it's all subjective but it can also all be quantified? i'd probably give you the acting, because the girls didn't exactly deliver powerhouse performances (although it's very important to the film that people like them played those roles), but i'd say james franco had the best performance of the two films. but you're looking at it too black and white lol. why is fight club's screenplay better?

Aone10 wrote:I watched it once and never cared to watch it again, it was certainly entertaining but nothing that demands multiple viewings.

it obviously does because based on your description of the film u don't rly understand it lel (although i wouldn't claim to completely understand it either, it's a confusing film)

Aone10 wrote:I posted the RT scores to show you that you are in a minority in your opinion that Spring Breakers is far better than Fight Club.

but.. so what? fight club isn't one of the highest rated films on there either, and i'm guessing it's one of your favorites, so that means you're in the minority too right? also, according to imdb, i'm in the minority because inception isn't in my top 15 lol.

Aone10 wrote:I'm not one to reference aggregated sites such as RT for arguments, but this is the rare case that demands it as I feel your opinion on the matter is just ridiculous, especially since you went as far to say that it's much better.

^^^

Aone10 wrote:I just find it difficult to take any argument telling me Spring Breakers is much better than Fight Club serious... especially when you then said you believe it will be re-rated in the future and be viewed in a light similar to such a brilliant and innovative film as great as 2001: A Space Odyssey.

i was only comparing spring breakers to a facet of space odyssey's critical response, not the quality of the film and i don't think the consensus on the film will shift to such a degree that space odyssey did. the reason i'm saying it will be re evaluated is because of the surface level response it's gotten to this point. there are already lots of reviews analyzing it to death.

Aone10 wrote:I say it's subjective because that's what opinions are.... however, that never stops anyone with differing opinions from disputing them, using those areas that can be quantified as means of carrying out an argument.

rofl trust me i understand the distinction between subjectivity and objectivity and how to separate the two when determining quality, that's what most of my arguments on here are about.

Aone10 wrote:James Franco was by far the best thing about Spring Breakers, but it does not top Brad Pitt or Edward Norton's performances in Fight Club.

Everything from the plot to the narrative writing and dialogue was just fantastic in Fight Club. It's dark dramatic and yet comedic nature coupled with the execution of the actors is what I truly love about it.

And for the record, Fight Club did not perform as well at the box office as studio execs thought it would and was initially met with polarizing reviews from critics. However, as you know, the film has aged well, becoming a critically acclaimed and commercially successful film.

lol i don't even want to talk about fight club anymore i really don't care about that film, i'm more interested in your interpretation of spring breakers because it seems you've misunderstood it

Aone10 wrote:In order for films to reach such a status in the future, multiple redeeming qualities need to be present, and aside from Franco's performance (which has already been acknowledged and applauded) what else does the film possess that will make critics and audiences WANT to revisit? It certainly isn't the mediocre to bad performances given by it's teeny bopper stars or it's oh so riveting cliché plot revolving around bad and reckless decisions made by youngsters during spring break....

i've explained why i think it's great on here before, and there are definitely people that can review it more eloquently than i can, but aside from the score, editing, and cinematography that enhance the visceral experience (which also adds to the fact that all of those things are skillfully done and create and pop culture, music video dream sequence like atmosphere), the "cliché" plot as you put it serves as a vehicle for statements on race, class, gender, environment, etc. everything about the narrative is meticulous, not lazy or generic. it's provocative because of the lack of outright condemnation and the density of symbolism makes for a challenging viewing experience.

Aone10 wrote:You are making Spring Breakers out to be far more complex than it really is.... at face value, all you really get is that today's youth is easily corrupted by materialism, fueling their fantasy of a "gangster" life, causing them to make decisions they don't have to make or to put it simple, the good girls gone bad scenario. You can further elaborate on that using unnecessary verbiage, but it is what it is.

nah, this is definitely an oversimplification. just look at franco's character and the description of his upbringing and how he turned out or how differently the girls perceive the situations they're put in. i don't like to over analyze movies or be pretentious about movies but those things are part of what makes sb gr8.

Aone10 wrote:There is an underlying sense of female camaraderie amongst the girls, but I don't buy all the "female empowerment" bullshit that some people say they get from the film.

I've heard that too, and it's probably in reference to the ending mostly. I think that's also about class/race reputation and bias though.

Aone10 wrote:I wasn't a big fan of the excessive use of cut scenes or neon lighting throughout... I thought it's execution in capturing that dreamy atmosphere you speak of was weak.

I don't really know what you mean here, I thought that was executed perfectly, visually pleasurable without sacrificing artistic integrity (because it fits so well with the narrative).

Aone10 wrote:Overall, I give the film a decent 7, mainly due to Franco's hilarious performance throughout... it's almost satirical. The "look at all mah shit" and the silencer blow job scene killed me.

should have won an oscar

Aone10 wrote:The minority thing isn't meant to be taken that far, I'm sure there are plenty of people out in the world that would place Fight Club amongst their favorite films, more so than the amount of people that consider Spring Breakers to be better than Fight Club.

yeah, but again I don't really think that's relevant in an argument of quality. a lot of fan favorites are pulp garbo.

Aone10 wrote:And link me to thread in which you discuss Spring Breakers, I must have missed it.

don't think there was a thread for it, i think it was just in the last movie you watched thread. me horse and lil b are rly the only outspoken fans of it here though i think. there are some interesting comments about it over on sl though which has a great movie watching community.
