The Ruins of Gorlan (Book 1)
by John Flanagan
Overview: The Rangers, with their dark cloaks and shadowy ways, have always made him nervous. The villagers believe the Rangers practice magic that makes them invisible to ordinary people. And now fifteen-year-old Will, always small for his age, has been chosen as a Ranger's apprentice. What he doesn't yet realize is that the Ranger's are the protectors of the kingdom. HIghly trained in the skills of battle and surveillance, they fight the battles before the battles reach the people. And as Will is about to learn, there is a large battle brewing. The exiled Morgarath, Lord of the Mountains of Rain and Night, is gathering his forces for an attack on the kingdom. This time, he will not be denied...
My Review:
4 Stars, A Quick, Enjoyable Read
This Story follows Will, who has no knowledge of his past, who becomes a Ranger's Apprentice. He is trained in the Ranger ways, and soon finds himself quite adept and skillfull.
This also follows Horace, one of Will's friends, who gets accepted into Battle School, and gets trained as a Knight. He finds himself into bully trouble.
Meanwhile, Will and his teacher Halt are sent onto a mission to hunt Kalkara (dangerous beasts), along with Halt's former apprentice Gilan.
I found this story to be somewhat cliched, but it was an enjoyable read, and good to pass time. It's not a grande epic, but it is amusing, and light hearted. The ending was exciting, so i don't mind going to pick up the sequel.
