Coraline

-The curious case of Coraline's buttons

Summary- Coraline and her family have just moved into an old house. She finds herself bored and depressed because her parents are too busy for work and her neighbors are too strange to relate to. However, she discovers a secret door in one of the rooms in the house that leads to an alternate universe where her life is perfect: her parents love her, her neighbors are amazing, and she finally feels not as lonesome as she does in reality. The only weird thing is everyone has buttons for eyes and if Coraline wants to live in this alternate reality, she must agree to have buttons for eyes too.

Review- This movie is amazing. I’ve mentioned it before, but I’m not a big fan of Pixar and it’s nice to see other companies making animated movies that aren’t horrible. There’s so many cool things about this movie. First of all, it is in 3-D, which actually kind of makes my eyes dry watching, but it’s 3-D movies are always fun (expect to pay extra though :P). It’s also not your usual computer-animated movie. Coraline (yes Coraline, not Caroline) is a stop-motion film, and it’s actually the longest stop-motion film. In case you don’t know what that is, think Nightmare Before Christmas, or all the youtube videos where people make their legos animated. Because of the stop-motion nature, the movie isn’t as visually smooth as say, Bolt or Finding Nemo (especially when the characters talk), but that’s the beautiful quirkiness of it. However, as far as stop-motion pictures go, this one is done extremely well and the animation is still fairly fluid and smooth. Now as for the story, one reason that I enjoyed it so much is because it is targeted toward an older audience compared to Pixar movies. Based off a story by Neil Gaiman, it’s not too scary or disgusting or obscene, but there is a feeling of creepiness, especially when Coraline visits the other world. I wouldn’t recommend taking anyone below 5, especially if they get nightmares easily. Apart from really young kids, I think this is a wonderful movie that has a pretty large target audience. I recommend watching it, if not only for the amazing animation and gimmicky 3-D effects.

Recommendations- Recommended movies may not share similar story elements or movie techniques with the reviewed movies. They are simply personal opinions that I think will give a good indication on if you will enjoy the reviewed movie. If you want to add or want me to remove a recommendation, please reply below with the movie name and reason.

This sounds to be an interesting Saturday Night watch. Your review makes me want to go and see it now. It sounds fascinating and I love movies that use imagination, and most of all, creativity, which seems to be lacking in a lot of recent animated films...
