Watchmen

-From left to right you have: Sockface, Bluebird, Jokester, Owlman, Beegirl, and way in the back Blue Lantern. Together they make the Watchmen.

Summary- In an alternate 1980’s reality where America won the Vietnam War, Nixon has a 5-term presidency, and masked vigilantes were once the norm, but banned by the government, a mysterious death of one of these vigilantes suddenly signifies trouble. Afraid masked heroes are being killed off, it is up to the other ex-vigilantes to figure out who caused the murder and what the motives were.

Review- If you have read Alan Moore’s Watchmen, then you know how poor my summary was and how hard it is to describe what the movie/comic is about. There is so much information and it’s so densely packed that the commercials, which make this movie look like a regular action beat ‘em up movie, does not do it justice. In fact there will be two groups of people, those who love the movie and those who hate it. I mean it’s just one of those movies where few people will be in the middle. Anyways, this back to the review, this movie is based on the famous graphic novel. And although not many people knew about Watchmen before this movie, it is definitely a great novel and well known among comic fans. In fact Times Magazine places it on the list of 100 literature works in this century! Anyways, luckily, Zack Snyder really stays true to the material and this movie did a really good job representing the graphic novel. However, they did cut out some parts and changed the ending (controversially), but overall, the story was basically the same and being around 3 hours, it’s understandable why some parts had to be cut. Of course Zack Synder (who did 300) had a lot of slow motion parts, but it wasn’t as overplayed as in 300 and it helped the visuals in the movie. Now you may love this movie or not, but it is visually spectacular. It is just beautiful to watch, especially in IMAX on the giant screen. However, there are some things I have to warn you about. The story is really deep, and can be confusing, especially if you expect it to be a normal comic book movie. I’d advice to read the graphic novel first because you will appreciate the movie better. It’s also rated ‘R’, but it takes advantage of that rating. Of course there’s violence and gore, but there’s also some really controversial violence and some things may offend those who are easily offended (I won’t ruin any plot details). There’s also a lot of sex and nudity, both female AND male, so be prepared for that too. Overall, if you liked the graphic novel, I’m pretty sure you’ll enjoy the movie. In fact, if you’re into superheroes/comic books at all, I think you’ll like this one. But, those who simply watch the trailers may be disappointed and see something they did not expect.

Recommendations- Recommended movies may not share similar story elements or movie techniques with the reviewed movies. They are simply personal opinions that I think will give a good indication on if you will enjoy the reviewed movie. If you want to add or want me to remove a recommendation, please reply below with the movie name and reason.
