Special effects do not make a film competent. I'd consider Avatar one of the worst films I've seen in a while, mostly becase it sends a message that fancy special effects are the only thing needed to garner acclaim. Not a good way to start off a new decade of film making. This very well may mark the end of great film making, in favor of multi million dollar budgets and cliché plots.

Star Wars ripped off more movies than I can count, plotwise, but still came off as original.
Avatar didn't, story wise at least.
