New Orleans Stars Win 2008 Celebrity GameOwens Stars in McDonald's NBA All-Star Celebrity Game as Hornets Rally to Win
NEW ORLEANS, Feb. 15 -- Let's hope Sunday's NBA All-Star Game is as exciting as the McDonald's NBA All-Star Celebrity Game.
NFL star Terrell Owens and hip-hop impresario Master P combined for 35 points and New Orleans withstood a frantic final possession by the Hornets for a thrilling 51-50 victory Friday night. Owens scored 18 points - including a dunk - and received MVP honors and Master P added 17, including the go-ahead free throws with 19 seconds left. The Hornets led most of the way and were paced by two-time Super Bowl champion Deion Sanders, who had 14 points and 13 rebounds, and world welterweight champion Floyd Mayweather, who also scored 14 points. "Rush Hour 3" star Chris Tucker made the game's only three 3-pointers and added 11 points.
On the final possession, Sanders, 2008 Grammy winner Common and Tucker missed potential game-winning shots.
The Hornets held a 28-23 halftime lead despite little contribution from "Access Hollywood" co-host Tony Potts, the MVP of last year's game in Las Vegas. They got the jump behind Mayweather, who scored nine first-half points, including a three-point play off a backcourt steal. Mayweather got some help from Sanders, who had six points and seven boards before refusing a halftime trade to New Orleans for "The Wire" actor Seth Gilliam.
New Orleans trailed by double digits before receiving a boost from Owens, a late arrival who wasted no time getting into the flow. He put up seven quick points, matching Miller - a former Toronto Raptors training camp invitee - for team scoring honors in the first half.
For the fourth straight year, the game was televised by ESPN. Actresses Gabrielle Union (New Orleans) and Alyssa Milano (Hornets) served as coaches and ESPN analysts Stephen A. Smith (New Orleans) and Bill Walton (Hornets) were general managers. At halftime, the sellout crowd at the Ernest N. Morial Convention Center were treated to a performance by hip hop star Lupe Fiasco during halftime.
Sophomore Streak at Six and CountingIt is said that trouble comes in threes. Sophomore sharpshooter Daniel Gibson showed the Rookies just what that means.
Gibson, the combo guard of the Cleveland Cavaliers, drained a record 11 3-pointers in 20 attempts and scored 33 points as the Sophomores again defeated the Rookies, 136-109, for their sixth straight victory in the 2008 T-Mobile Rookie Challenge & Youth Jam at New Orleans Arena on Friday night.Gibson shattered Kyle Korver's Rookie Challenge record of seven 3-pointers set in 2005. He fell one point shy of Amare Stoudemire's mark for points in the annual showcase and took home MVP honors and joined Zydrunas Ilgauskas (1998) - not LeBron James - as the only Cavaliers to win the award.
Memphis forward Rudy Gay scored 22 points on 9-of-12 shooting for the Sophomores, who had five players with at least 17 points. They shot 57 percent from the field, including 17-of-32 from the arc. The extra year of experience again was a factor.
"I think it makes a big difference," said reigning Rookie of the Year Brandon Roy of Portland, who tuned up for Sunday's All-Star Game with 17 points and seven assists.
The Rookies hung around for most of the first half but a late spurt by the Sophomores sparked by Gibson opened a 66-52 halftime lead.
Seattle's Kevin Durant and Atlanta's Al Horford, the top two candidates for 2008 Rookie of the Year, led the Rookies, who made just four 3-pointers. Durant scored 23 points and Horford added 19.
The T-Mobile Rookie Challenge & Youth Jam was televised live nationally on TNT and broadcast live on ESPN Radio.
