Wasn't it the same with Rooney and Utd fans? He said he's leaving then everyone goes "FUCK ROONEY BOOOO", and then he signs a new contract which makes him the highest paid player, and everyone is back to "ROONEY IS THE BEST OMG"...

Torres needed that move. Liverpool isn't in the Champions League and they probably wont be there next season either + they're not going to win the title anytime soon with the squad they have now. I know they've got new owners and more money but Torres is 27 and he can't wait forever.
