Shootouts in the NHL?

Postby Hunneh_Buns » Jan 16th, '11, 04:08

What are your opinions on this?

I like to watch shootouts, it's fun and exciting, but I don't think that should determine what team wins the tied game. Hockey is a team sport, so when OT is over a shootout is not acceptable since it relies on a few players of the team. I remember a few years ago, Craig MacTavish, the head coach of the Oilers at the time, said that their goal was to make to a shootout in every game. At this time the Oilers sucked during regulation, but dominated during shootouts. I didn't find that acceptable at all.

I think if the game is still tied after the 3rd period, it should go to as many OT periods as it needs.

Absolutely hate the shootout as a way to decide a game. Completely agree with what you said.

they are exciting to watch, but you are right .... Its no longer based on team work. It it should not determine a win espacllly in playoffs

How did ties work back in the pre-lockout days? I was too young to remember.

5 minute overtime and if you tied, each team was awarded a point.

I cant really remember if it was 4on4 or 5on5. Shootouts have clouded my brain.

Geno wrote:Yup, but now there's a bonus point. You get 1 point for making it to OT, and 2 points if you win, still get 1 if you lose in OT.

So it makes it even harder to make the playoffs because more points are given out.

habs have only been in shout outs twice i think this season.... im happy for that :)
