Top 10 Sitcoms?

Postby EminemBase » Apr 1st, '12, 20:05

Mine would be...

1. The Office (UK)
- A comedy masterpiece. The most perfect, realistic, detailed, nuanced and crafted balance of comedy, drama, story and characters I've ever seen. A stunning work of art.

2. Curb Your Enthusiasm
- Ridiculously fucking hilarious. Probably the most blatantly enjoyable experience of comedy ever on television, consistently challenging and original. Comedic bliss.

3. The Larry Sanders Show
- Another comedy masterpiece, fantastic characters, and a superb, affecting ending.

4. Extras
- A study of fame and friendship, ego and ambition: as philosophical as it is funny.

5. Arrested Development
- Bold. Fucking hilarious, and bold. Such enjoyable comedy, which is almost abstract and bizarro-world at times, and yet they still manage to weave real meaning into stories, and make it resonate. Certainly one of the most original comedies ever.

6. Fawlty Towers
- One of the best comedy character-studies ever. 12 classic episodes.

7. I'm Alan Partridge
- One of the first true TV explorations into cringe-comedy. A lot of people in the UK often forget this and credit Gervais with popularizing that exploration but, this came first.

8. The King of Queens
- Comfort watching, to a degree, but consistently and genuinely funny. Doug is one of my favourite comedy characters ever, and this manages to be true enough to life and still compact and streamlined in its execution, without being too schmaltzy or cheesy. Great comedy.

9. Fraiser
- A great idea, to make the main character a psychiatrist. Most shows are about people and relationships anyway, so it's like a rational shortcut to study these areas, within episodes, and it gives so much justification to the study. Not always funny, but classy, and classic.

10. Louie
- Very promising. It was just a matter of time before Louie C.K. was given a proper platform for his voice, through a series, and this (so far) is excellent. Totally unafraid to study any thought or area of contemplation or life, I can't wait to see what heights he takes this to.

Honourable mentions: Blackadder, Lucky Louie, The Office (US) and The Young Ones.

Oh, and Two Guys and a Girl (the real 'Friends' (garbage) that should have that acclaim).

So what are your top 10?

The Simpsons (I'd count it as a sitcom), The Office (UK), Peep Show, The Royle Family and Alan Patridge would be my top 5.

Nah not for me.

That's just a popular comedy but... it's like, it's comfortable watching but, doesn't really have any depth or serious comedic merit to me. They're just popular characters, who get into caper.

It's alright but, never truly touched a nerve for me.

Maybe if I had premium cable. Sometimes I catch a good show on comedy central but that's rare considering they're always playing movies I either already have or no longer wish to see (or both).

Also, a mention for Spaced. Which was fucking amazing, and ridiculously underrated.

@Amadeo - What did you think of Angry Boys?

Only caught a few episodes but it seemed a bit too repetitive and predictable, didn't find any of the characters particularly engaging, either. Was expecting big things with the quality of SHH.
