to solve the CD problem just copy the hole cd on to a cd-r and use the cd - to install xp ( i have ad that problem before and that fixed it for me)

you don't need xp installed to install xp. you can just insert the CD in to the drive and switch on the computer. if that dont work the you need to have the computer setup to boot from the cd drive.
