If its a software problem : "system restore" can do the trick.

ive stumbled upon a similar problem the other day, for some reason my computer stoped opening dvd's, it opens sum, that have no region ( region 0 ) that is, even though my pc use to read region 1 disks.

I suspect its coz ive been experimenting with region killers and installing nero 7 at the same time

I know the answer to the Region problem, you need to update you're DVD ripping software. Cause we all know you're burning them to computer  . If you get a recent ripping software like DVDShrink2.3 or 3.2. That will do the trick......
