While driving down the road, I saw an elderly couple retrieving their
family dog from the highway.
The old man bent down to the dog's lifeless body. He touched his hand
to its chest. He studied the body and the demented figure. He rubbed his
hands across the ribcage, you could feel the cracked ribs. He removed
his hands from the dog's chest, and flipped them over. They were
drenched in the dog's blood. The old lady gasped.
The old man eyes were glazed, no emotions could be detected. Without
hesitation he placed the dog's limp body on the tailgate of the truck.
The old lady stood nearby on the roadside her eyes beginning to water;
soon they were overflowing with tears. She tried wiping them away with
her hand, but soon gave up for the tears kept coming. Finally, she fell
to the ground, screaming. She then held her home-made apron to her
face, hiding all features of her beauty. Her arms soon gave out and fell to
her side, scraping her hands against the pavement. Her body was shaking
frantically.
The old man watched this scene, but the devastation of the woman didn't
seem to ravel any sympathy from him. He then slammed the tailgate,
throwing the dog's body into the bed of the truck.
The old lady having seen this began to shout at the old man, what she
said could not be understood because her voice was hoarse from crying.
The old man simply left her on the roadside crying. He walked over to
his truck and climbed into the cab. He shut the door and began singing
to an old Hank Williams song, "Got a feeling called the blues since my
baby said goodbye."
The old woman was red with anger and couldn't believe the harshness of
her husband's behavior. She slowly began to stand to her feet, soon she
stood there, her knees were buckling. She made her way to the passenger
side of the truck and ripped open the door. She sat inside and slammed
the door.
The old man was raged with her actions, and as they drove down the
gravel road, you could hear the two bickering and arguing. Their truck grew
smaller and finally disappeared as the distance grew. But, you could
still hear the old couple ranting and raving. The passer-bye who had
witnessed the whole event, could picture the crushed body of the dog, and
he turned and stared at the stained dirt where the dog's body once
layed.
