BEWARE-Account phishers are out!

Postby Vengeance » Nov 2nd, '08, 23:55

its when a person uses a false link to redirect you to an identical rapidshare login page, in which once you submit your login, the details are sent to the user and they could steal your accounts.

Signs of possible phishing sites:

Most of the time, they are used by link-protection sites. Also, if you are brought to a rapidshare login, check the link and make sure its the correct rapidshare login URL. If your not sure, for extra safety, go back to the rapidshare homepage and if your not logged in, do it there so you know your at the correct page.

What do I do if I find a person with a "phished" link, and what happens to them?
Report, Report, Report. Once reported we will remove the topic from public view and most likely the person will be BANNED. Thats right, no warn, BANNED.

Is it only Rapidshare phishers?
So far it has only been for rapidshare accounts, but that does not mean its only for rapidshare. People will most likely phish for other popular uploading site accounts, so beware.

This is crap, so what happens if I get phished?
We can only TRY to prevent it, but we are not responsible if you fall for it. If you loose your account, though, contact RS, MU, whatever and see what they can do. If you feel like you have entered your info in a fake site, CHANGE YOUR PASSWORD IMMEDIATELY!

Certain things to look for that may save your account from phishers!

Be suspicious of any e-mail with urgent requests for personal financial information.

Don't be fooled by e-mails with upsetting or exciting (but false) statements that try to get you to react immediately.

If you suspect the message might not be authentic, don't use the links within the e-mail to get to a webpage.

Don't fill out forms in e-mail messages that ask for personal financial information.

Communicate information such as credit card numbers only via a secure website or the telephone.

To make sure you're on a secure Web server, check the beginning of the URL in your browser address bar. It should be "https" rather than "http." The "s" stands for secure.

Consider installing a Web browser toolbar such as EarthLink's ScamBlocker to alert you before you visit known phishing fraud websites.

If an e-mail message is not personalized, assume it's not a valid message.

Log in to your online accounts regularly, and check bank, credit and debit card statements to ensure that all transactions are legitimate.

Ensure that your browser is up-to-date and security patches have been applied.

A legitimate e-mail from the bank or another company where you have an account will generally include your name. Dear customer" is a red flag.

Don't e-mail personal or financial information. Legitimate firms don't ask for this information by e-mail.

Don't follow a link in an e-mail to the company's Web site. Open a browser window and type in the company's address instead. If you're suspicious, call customer service.

Regularly check your statements from bank and credit accounts for fraudulent transactions. Financial institutions will generally reimburse you if you were the victim of fraud.

Avoid accessing online banking at a public Internet terminal, such as in a library. A thief may have installed software to capture the information of anyone who uses it.

Check an e-mail's digital signature to ensure that it is authentic. The Anti-Phishing Working Group explains how at http://www.antiphishing.org/smim-dig-sig. htm

Forward phishing e-mails to spam@uce.gov. If you believe you've been scammed, file your complaint at http://www.ftc.gov, then visit the FTC's Identity Theft Web site at http://www.consumer.gov/idtheft to learn how to minimize your risk of damage from ID theft. Or call the FTC at (877) 382-4357.
