School Officials Propose Ban of Whole Milk

Postby j_shady » Dec 11th, '05, 16:31

CHICAGO - Cartons of whole milk would be considered junk food, but baked Cheetos would not, under new rules proposed Friday by Illinois education officials.

The State Board of Education proposed the rules after Gov. Rod Blagojevich asked for a junk food ban in elementary and middle schools.

The new rules focus on the nutritional content of foods rather than broad categories of food.

Because of that, the proposed guidelines would allow 1 ounce bags of baked potato chips, even though all chips are now banned under the board's current definition of junk food. Whole milk would also be banned because of its high fat content, school officials said.

Some of the recommended cut-off points: calories from fat exceeding 35 percent (except nuts and seeds), calories from saturated fat exceeding 10 percent, and total calories exceeding 200 for an individual package.

"I think it's more practical," said the board's general counsel, Jonathan Furr. "We're focusing on nutrition, which is the objective to focus on a healthier environment."

I have to disagree with this policiy. Our school is going to start it after out winter break, but I doubt it's going to work. It's not really fair to the people who aren't unhealthy and enjoy soda or candy once in a while. And for the people who are unhealthy, I doubt it'll change much. They can always go off-campus to eat or pack their own lunches. It's like making drugs illegal, it won't stop the people who like it from obtaining more. All that's going to happen is make the school poorer because no one would buy the horrible stuff in the cafeterias and this will probably require us to pay higher taxes to fund the schools :tounge2: . That and I do like buying soda and candy every once in a while at school :D .

in my school they banned soda and chips. The only type of junk food you can get is baked chips which are expensive and they taste horrible. Most people just skip lunch and go to mcdonald's after school since it's just down the street.

Ha. That's exactly my point. I can kinda see it being useful in elementary schools, but past that, teens can drive or bike or walk to nearby places. Not only is McDonalds probably 5000x unhealthier, the junk food provdied a good source of revenue.

Now I'm not against being healthy...I just think schools should change the PE system and allow more atheletic clubs or something more useful and effective.

^^ Wow Sarah you sounded like a doctor :p

Eww did you know a big mac is half of your daily fat intake? :snack:

I think banning junk food is a good idea, but I wouldn't survive. :p

yes a PE thing is good but the students aren't really gonna feel like doing a whole lotta running around when their diet is just junk food, plus foods like Mc Donald's are very high in saturated fat which is the cause of heart desease

if all people eat is that then they're increasing the risk of heart desease to a very high level

Well I agree with you. It mighta been unclear, but I meant that any junk food at school would probably be much more healthier than the stuff they serve at McDonalds. So banning junk food and resulting in kids going to McDonalds to eat is pointless.
