I have taken exerts from her statement which I thought were most interesting.
Afeni Shakur, mother of Tupac Shakur (2Pac), the most successful rap artist in music history, and David Schulhof, co-CEO of EverGreen Copyrights (EverGreen), a leading independent global music publishing and marketing company, today announced a partnership to develop new opportunities for the late iconic rapper's songs, including future releases of Tupac albums that have never been heard.
It seems that Afeni hasn't sold her sons music catalog after all, and that the deal is in fact a partnership. However, it doesn't specify what the partnership entails, who has the creative control and how the profit will be distributed amongst the partnership. It goes on to quote Afeni.
"I believe that after 10 years I have done as much as I can on my own to further the creative aspect of Tupac's music. I'm looking forward to working with EverGreen's publishing and creative marketing teams to reach a more global market and to expand the opportunities for my son's music."
A fair and true point from Afeni and I believe it is a valiant move from Afeni to give some control to a company who in all honesty are more likely to be able to give Tupac the direction and budget his music deserves, something which has so far been lacking.
Co-Ceo of EverGreen, David Schulhof added the following;
"Tupac was one of the most prolific songwriters that ever lived. He had a tremendous impact both as a songwriter and social activist, and left behind a body of work that will forever attract generations of fans. We are honored to be working with Afeni Shakur and helping to realize the full potential of this catalog."
This seems to be a very positive step forward for the legacy of Tupac Amaru Shakur, and one which fans have been asking for for nearly 10 years. The Press release also confirmed the projects we revealed yesterday as well as declaring "several forthcoming posthumous albums" were being developed, and that "additionally, in 2008 Becker & Mayer is publishing the book Tupac Remembered, an intimate portrayal featuring interviews of political leaders, actors, rap artists and others who had a personal connection to him."
