Kick Coppin' Chaos for NY Sneaker Freaks

Postby j_shady » Nov 20th, '05, 04:59

Last night Niketown at 6 E. 57th Street in NYC attracted a crowd of over 200 shoe fanatics for the 10 pm release of some limited edition Nike Dunks.

Some dunk enthusiasts waited for days for the limited edition release. Dominique Thomas, 21, of Colorado told NY's Daily News he showed up at the store Monday just to make sure he'd be the first to pay $130 dollars for a brown pair of This Day in History Dunks.

"This was totally worth the wait, especially being in New York," he said. "It's the shoe capital of the U.S."

Other Dunks on sale included the NYC Dunks and the Cowboy Dunks, both $90 a pair.

Sneaker culture has grown tremendously in the past few years, with limited edition shoes fetching thousands of dollars in online auctions. Whether folks are flocking to stores for the sake of style or in the hopes of generating cash flow, sneakers certainly have a way of sending folks into a frenzy.

This past February a near riot broke out at The Reed Space store on downtown Manhattan's Orchard street after a few shoppers attempted to cut the line waiting to buy limited edition Nike Pigeon (NYC) Dunks. When the 300 lb bouncer guarding the store was unable to stop the fight police had to be called.

For hip hop enthusiasts who have been awaiting the limited edition De La Dunk, designed by De La Soul, it has been reported that the shoe is already out in Canada, and will be released in the US later this month. The unique design features holographic material and green cement colored leather.
