No. But what does that prove? But does air rhyme with ate? They both have the long a sound, doesn't mean they rhyme.

Damn, I hate to have to stoop so low, but i've looked up a few sources, some examples of regular speech from youtube, and some definitive terms from Dictionary.com.

Notice how there's a difference using the "ee" sound to when it's "eer", that's what i've been trying to say. It's always pronounced like "ear" which is the "air" sound, which rhymes perfectly with hair, chair, etc. Notice in italics and underlined also the "air" sound which also has wear as an example, which is the same as ear.

Simply put. Wear and ear don't sound the same. Period. Maybe with an accent then do but you can look in any real dictionary (Websters for example) and look at the pronunciation and you'll see. Air DOES rhyme with Wear but Wear does NOT rhyme Ear. I don't really know what else to say. It's simple phonetics.

Look, it shows that the "eer" sound is different to the "ee" sound. It cannot be pronounced with the "ee" sound, that's what i've been saying, and obviously also shown on the chart is that it is much more closely pronounced like the "air" sound. If you people can't see that it's you're loss, maybe it is a matter of accent, but I don't ever remember anybody pronouncing cheer like chee, cos when you add the "r" it totally changes the sound.

NO.

Just because you add an R to "ee" dosnt make the "ee" another sound... an "ea" as your suggesting, in those particular words.

in words like

Near
hear
Dear
Fear

its pronounced as nEEr, hEE, dEEr, fEEr.

Just because its written in a way that can sound both ways, doesnt mean it sounds the same way. Just pick a Dictionary with phonetics, the proper phonetic symbols, not word examples.

Image[ea]r ~ ear
Imageh[ai]r ~ hair

The ai' combination will always sound closer to Image

ea' and ee' depending on the word will sound different however. But not with ai'.

Whatever, you guys are beyond convincing. "r" is a consonant that begins with a vowel sound because it's pronounced "or", so to put that at the end of a "ee" vowel sound totally changes the sound of the word. It can no longer be pronounced like "ee". It's not like meet, feet, feel, reel or need. Those words can easily be pronounced with the "ee" sound, but with "r" at the end of the word it's almost physically difficult to say the word like the letter say it should be pronounced. I was just using common sense and a keen understanding of how the English language works to make my point. I was probably expecting to be proven wrong on this, because there's always people out there who will always look shit up to prove people wrong, so I decided to look it up myself, and checking out that pronounciation table on Dictionary.com proved to me that I was right. If ye guys wanna look up websters, oxford or whatever and post it here with Cheers being pronounced like Cheese, belt ahead I look forward to it.

Edit: checked my dictionary, too... ur right ... *eats words*

Im pretty ure though, that its pronouced in both ways though... ive personally never heard it pronouced the same way as Chair.

I think its more of a english versus american english thing. Coz most people say Beer and Bear in two different ways, u cant mistake the two words. Ill check the american dictionary later.

Well, thank you for admitting that Aspirin, it's not often you will concede you might have been wrong, and it's very much appreciated when you do. Of course it could be a matter of accent too, there are so many different accents and so many different ways of pronouncing words in the English language, that any word could probably be heard in many different ways. I wasn't saying by definition that Cheer is pronounced like Chair (although after lookin' it up the dictionary seems to back me up), I was just saying the natural way and more common way to pronounce cheer is like chair. It's just not natural to say it any other way, maybe you can beat it into you to say it with the "ee" sound, when you're trained with strange phonetic learning systems (that they employ in the States) but for me they should always be pronounced the same.

It's such a petty little argument anyway, lets let it die right about now and stop being linguistic fascists! :D

A Sri Lankan tellin' me how the Irish speak, Ireland an English speaking country. I haven't an accent, I say words the way they're meant to be said. I`m not an honours student, ass-lickin teachers pet or dictionary devourer, but i've always had an uncanny understanding of the way English works. You cannot say "chee"-rs pronouncing it like say the "chi" of Tai Chi because to do that then you have to make it like this: Chee-ers, adding the vowel sound before the "r", which adds an extra syllablle. If that's the way you guys are pronouncing it, then it's wrong, either way it's gettin' a little boring tryin' to convince ye.

I wasn't callin you teachers pet, etc lol, I was just sayin that I wasn't, and that I base my opinions on logic and understanding of the language. Damn, take a chill pill phil.

P.s Interesting that you spelt Sheer like shear (Which isn't a word) and is the same kind of pronounciation we're debating about. Ironic.
