Bystander effect (warning, bloody)

The bystander effect (also known as bystander apathy, Genovese syndrome, or bystander intervention) is a psychological phenomenon in which someone is less likely to intervene in an emergency situation when other people are present and able to help than when he or she is alone.

So, that happend last year, dude was stabbing his ex GF like 70 times and ppl were watching for a while before anyone started to help, which still took long..
What do you think, it happend in the past that ppl died cus no one helped, just watched.. Do u think those ppl should be punished? What would you do?

Guess it depends what the situation is....if it is a stabbing like the example you gave, people are obviously less likely to intervene if their is a risk of personal injury to themselves.

I would like to say I would help but its easy to say that sat behind a computer screen, don't know what would happen if I actually witnessed it for real.

well look at 9/11 thank god that someone was brave enough to stop the terroirsists or 9/11 would have been more drastic..i guess it all depends on the mindstate and courage a person has. do they believe in doing the right thing or do they care more about there own safety, sometimes u cant blame them, i think that if i felt like stopping the guy from stabbing the wife felt safe enough, or that i had to do it and couldn't just watch i would stop him(this is where fat ppl come in) these guys dond need to worry about safety just let the fat bastards jump on top of the guy :smoking:

when in crowd, people think like "why should i be the one?". it means it's more likely that you gonna die on heart attack surrounded by 50 people than in an almost empty street. i think it's because when there's few people, they feel more responsible - crowd always makes you feel anonymous.

you know, the thing is that people are afraid, too. and i bet it's quite shocking experience to see someone being stabbed. most of us, we're common people. we ain't policemen, paramedics or soldiers and we don't see it on a regular basis, so we don't know what to do.

i know it shouldn't be like that, but that's how human beings are. soon, i'm going to have my first practice in emergency. i know how to do a heart massage, but honestly, i can't say i'm ready to do it in reality. i've got no idea what i would do when i'd see someone stabbing his partner.. anyone saying he knows, is bullshitting, unless he/she's done it before.
