the asteroid story is getting old. I remember when i was like 10, on tv they show these programs about an asteroid hitting in 2001 ... and the "scientist" would be so sincere about it. Lmao.

Nothing is gonna happen, althoug if i knew the world was gonna end in 5 years id quit school, quit any job i had, take a huge loan in the bank, and waste five years doing absolutely nothing but that which is interesting to me.

the mayan calender stops at 2012, then they say a metor will hit causing a week of darkness or something in that direction. Well yea they where pretty smart for theyre time, but we know alot more now. Won't happen, if it does, we'll all die due something special instead of a heart attack at a old age

I have also herd this many of times.

What people don't think about is the technology we posses in this day and age, if a meteor was about to strike earth, we would know about it well before it got near the earths atmosphere, as their are observatories round the globe studying the sky's and the space around us twenty four seven.

I'm sure the idea of diverting mass would work, what i mean by this is... landing shuttles in a certain area aboard the meteor/asteroid, then having them all fire afterburners and multiple jet powered engines to divert the meteor/asteroid to change its course, the best way to do it would be to send it sideways to the bearing it is headed as sending it back the way it came would take more momentum and fuel, witch we might not have when using a lot to get there anyway.
(I don't see how this would work though as oxygen is needed to create a flame, but oxygen tanks could be used to coincide alongside the fuels needed to create a combustion chamber.)

When and if it comes to the time of a meteor heading for earth, evasive action would be taken in the quickest most life conserving way.

Worry what you will, as it will only do you no good if the inevitable does happen.

As for me, If the world ends.... I don't give a toss as i will have lived the best years of my life by then. :D

@ locos.

Did you know that we can only monitor around 15% of the sky area. In all the weirdness (and im not saying its true) a meteor can sneak up to a point were people are gonna see it in observatories, without the help of the hubble telescope or shit like that.

I know that the sky's are not monitored by visual means twenty four seven and their is that possibility a meteor/asteroid could sneak up from no where, but with the mass and size of the object traveling through space at such speeds, it would create like space waves or similar electromagnetic waves that can be picked up by remote satelite's from hundreds of thousands of miles away.
The only thing is... if the trajectory of the meteor/asteroid is direct for earth, then their is the possibility that it could be come a stealth bomb as the space like waves could be carried behind it, logic would tell you instantly that space waves would travel faster than any meteor/asteroid in every direction, but if the wave is clouded by mass then this could also be a loop hole in the sky's defense systems as it would be harder to determine what it is and where its trajectory path lies.

We shall never know till put in some sort of world threatening situation to do with meteors/asteroids. :)

Sarah wrote:my science teacher said they're predicting one, but it wasn't 2012, it was like 2020 something. And it also said that there was a 1/6000 chance of it actually happening :flower: and we wont know for sure until years before it happens.

That's true. It's actually 2029. Check it out.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/99942_Apophis.

Now I know Wikipedia isn't the most reliable source, but I actually heard it from Google news first. Apparently NASA is thinking of some sort of bomb that would be placed into outer space that is capable of deflecting an approaching asteroid's path, not blow it to smithereens, but to off set its course if it's headed towards Earth.

http://www.foxnews.com/story/0,2933,292464,00.html

Supposedly the asteroid won't hit, but hey...doesn't hurt to play it safe.

And also, if you read the wikipedia site, the asteroid, if it hits, has a estimated impact of 800 megatons!

Just to set a scope of how big this is, the largest nuke to ever explode had the energy 50 megatons. Most nukes are only 1 megaton. A nuclear bomb yielding 20 megatons=1540 Hiroshima bombs.

Another example:
http://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/c ... Meteor.jpg

That was created by a meteor with the energy of around 10-20 megatons.
