To be honest, I don't see why a bear can't be mutated enough to look like that. Or some odd cross bread between a bear and something else - maybe even a different type of bear (I don't know much about how bears breed.)

I've see weirder looking mutated animals. To think that an entire species of these things exist would be a strong statement, even if you had something that looked like that in captivity for all to see. Doesn't mean its some strange species.
