My position is that Assad and his army of murderers must be stopped immediately, by any means necessary. We don’t need to wait 20 years for hipsters to make viral videos and wear T-Shirts that say “Assad 2032”. Kony has been terrorizing African villagers with guns for 26 years and people only started to care about it recently. Assad has been attacking his own major cities with tanks for a year. If we act now we can still save a lot of lives. There is no reason either of these people should wake up tomorrow.

While I would be inclined to agree with you, the problem is that Russia and China won't allow it. They've blocked the UN resolution to do something about it, and will continue doing so...perhaps forever. This means that foreign intervention is very unlikely, unless it's by a nation in the region.

Unfortunately, it doesn't look like any regional powers are going to do anything about it either. There are concerns about arming the resistance, because they are fragmented rebel groups that may end up being adversarial once they come into power. Since Assad has large chemical weapons reserves, this could be a big problem.

Unless Russia steps up, nothing is going to change.

Dismantle the UN? No, I don't think that's the right way to go. I would suggest a serious re-thinking of how the UN can be more effective. Let's start with the veto-system... That is what fucks up all the time...

Right. This is what everyone needs to know.

One word: Oil. That's all you need to remember, folks. Not that Syria itself is rich in oil, but they are strong allies with Iran, who are of course, the 3rd largest exporter of oil in the world and are making things difficult for the west right now.

All this "kids are being slaughtered" stuff is propaganda. Some of the "local reporters" who make these "on the scene" reports have actually been caught being told what to say to the cameras once they go live.
