Prostitution

Postby SliK » Nov 16th, '12, 08:16

Is there anything wrong with prositution? When I'm hungry, I go to a grocery store instead of hunting for food. Or I might go to a fast food outlet instead of cooking. I can buy bottled water instead of collecting it from the river. If I can't look after my child, clean my house, drive a car, manage my finances, etc. I can pay someone to do it.

There are many professions that require people to use their body, such as art, dance, modeling, tradesmen, athletes, etc. so what is wrong with someone earning a living off having sex?

Both parties that engage in prostitution (the prostitute and the customer) are judged by the majority of society. The assumption is there must be something wrong with someone who would pay for sex. Words like "pathetic" and "desperate" are used to describe such people. Prostitutes are seen as sluts, and dirty, almost as a lower class of society. Certainly not the type of people everyone wishes to be associated with.

So, TR, what are your thoughts on prositution and the people who engage in it?

It should be legal, imo. A lot of issues with prostitution would be somewhat fixed if it were legalized. The black market leads to STDs, pimps, and human trafficking. All of these could be resolved if there were some regulations.

In Australia it is legal in Brothels that register as a legitimate business that adhere to regulations. It is illegal to hook on the streets but I see it all the time in a place called Islington, 40 minutes from where I live. I have a friend who visits brothels and is open about it. I'm not opposed to the idea, and don't really think anything of it. I know it shocks some people and they think it's disgusting.

You make a really good point. But, you gotta remember that there's a lot of crazy people out there. Safety's not guaranteed for prostitution and that's a main concern.

Is your life really worth some cash?

Ice road truckers would tell you it is.

Point being that a high risk job generally means high pay and the reward is worth the risk. Obviously there are the back alley junkies that suck your dick for a crack rock buttt the risk is with the customer more than anything really. Personal judgement has to play a part. If you put yourself in dangerous situations, that's your fault, not your job.

I can kind of understand why prostitution is illegal, because it leads to prostitution rings and pimps/hoes and all that stuff, which is obviously a bad and terrible thing. So by paying a prostitute you're putting your money into those rings and actually paying the pimp, and not the woman. Those are also usually associated with drugs too so then that's probably where your money goes to so you're funding something which is obviously illegal and should be. Plus, most of the time the women are doing it against their will because of the drugs.

However, I think if we got rid of those rings and it was a women acing on her own and she got to keep all the money then that should be legal and fine. The problem is that's pretty hard to do.

What's wrong is that lots of the prostitutes have men behind them who control them. It's not easy to just break out of it and say "hey, I am gonna get an education". They get beaten up by them, held as sex-slaves, etc.

Maybe now you're thinking "then they shouldn't have become prostitutes", but you need to know that many of these (especially those from Africa) are looking for a brighter future, and since they are poor, they can't really get an education or a job where they live. Suddenly a man approaches and promises them money and stuff, and they go with him, and BOOM, they are caught in that ring.

This is not something you just read in a book. It is actually happening today.

I am talking about those who are in USA and Canada but originally from Africa.
At least that's how it is in Norway.

Alright. I get you. Then it's maybe a different story.

I'm not really talking about the legality of it, prostitution is legal here in Australia... But why does society judge a woman for being a prostitute?

Lets say it's a high class escort, a gorgeous woman who earns $5000 per night. She's pulling home $250,000 annually. Checked regularly for STDs and of course makes the man wear a condom for blowjobs and intercourse. Her clientele will be more sophisticated, wealthy and generally less of a risk. How do you view a woman like this, compared to the ones you see on the streets?

How do you feel about the people who visit these woman?

Are you trying to say that we shouldn't as a society judge people like her as being better or we should

I'm saying we shouldn't judge her anymore than we judge a masseuse or model.

And bigray, we live in a consumer driven society. You could argue that your money would be better off going to charity than any number of goods and services that we use. I drive a $20,000 car and I could easily be getting around in car that cost 10% of that. I put 19" wheels and a $2.5k sound system in it... Should that money have gone to my children's education or to a charity?

What about disabled men and women (wheelchair bound for example) who may otherwise never get to experience the touch of another person, much less an attractive one. Should they be judged for paying for sex?
