Alturism

Postby CrashBand » Mar 26th, '13, 07:08

Is this an incoherent idea?

Can we do any acts that don't satisfy our own self-interest.

Like dying or being tortured to save someone else.

But then do we redefine alturism? As simply no monetary gains - or an equivalent.

I think that altruism is interesting, in that people do things that seem selfless, but could actually have some sort of self gain attached to them. What I mean is, can we call it altruistic if someone does something selfless, but only to better their own self-image?

Now I'm not saying that everyone is like that. I do think there are people who are out there who are truly selfless, so there is no need to redefine altruism. It exists, but I think it's interesting how a lot of selflessness is actually only done to better ones own self-image in society, in order to look like a good person to ones peers.

Pure altruism is impossible.

All actions serve the actor in some way, otherwise the action would not have been performed.
"I take yall diss as endearment - I love it when I hear it
Maybe words offensive - free speech I don't fear it
Maybe music can take us to a place so atmospheric
Beyond our greatest imagination, illuminatin' experience
If we open our ears and close our inhibitions, it's clear"
