A.I. - do you believe?

Postby yoshi » Jun 9th, '08, 13:48

Honestly, do you believe that in, let's say, 50 years we will be able to create robots which will think and act like humans?

As for now, I don't. Japanese scientists created robots that actually can do certain things, smile and so on [yes, i watch Discovery Channel :smoking: ], but still, creating a being that would actually have the ability to think for itself like Haley Joel Osment and Jude Law and 'dominate' the world is pure s-f to me. Why? Because human body and brain is too damn complicated and perfect to copy it.

Of course not. Not in 50 years. I'd say give or take a couple centuries and probably. First, I'm assuming by A.I. you mean human intelligence though (what if you make a robot dog :D.) , and even then It all depends how you define A.I.

Any machine that is able to learn, process, and apply the knowledge it gains technically has A.I. (at least in my opinion). Also, the decisions it makes aren't hardwired into it, but rather decided based on what it learns. Now the question is...how intelligent do you want the robot :p . Assuming the intelligence of a human, then yes...that would take a very very long time if we even manage it. And of course there are limitations too (for example: the amount of data the robot can store). But aren't there are limitations on intelligences of animals in general? Like, you can't teach a chimpanzee to talk, at least not that I know of...but those animals are still brilliant in their own rights.

On another note, even though I think creating artificial intelligence in a robot is possible, I'm not certain we as people are going to for numerous reasons. First of all... and most importantly, there's really no need to. Why would you want a thinking/learning robot? That's just asking for a sci-fi robot takeover :D. I mean hopefully we're not gonna get so lazy that we need to build machines to think for us. Also, if it is artificial intelligence, the robots would have to learn and make mistakes so it's much more efficient to program for a robot to do whatever it has to do correctly the first time.
Lastly, back to my limitations on intelligence from the previous paragraph. maybe we as humans will never be smart enough to create A.I. that can match our intelligence, but that doesn't mean somebody/something (Alien? Future evolutionary version of us?) out there won't.

I said 50 years, because it's most likely that I will somehow be able to see it. In 200 years? It doesn't interest me that much since I won't be here to witness it. :p

That's what I meant. Learn, feel, process and make use of the knowledge. Right now we got a kind of A.I. - robots/machines that actually can analyze facts - for example AED [Automatic External Defibrillator], but I don't consider it as some form of intelligence. It just analyzes the heartbeat and diagnoses potentially life-threatening condition, because it was programmed to do so.
Same goes to all the computers, machines and robots used in the industry or more advanced medicine.

When asking about A.I. and creating it, I mean this kind of science-fiction version of A.I. :p

Yeah, nothing is going to happen in 50 years :D so I guess both of us will never find out.

I agree with you there. Machines now analyze facts and produce a result. They don't learn anything. The machines are programmed to produce a result from a given fact they receive...they don't really think for themselves.

As for real A.I. in the movies, I'm still optimistic that it can be done, but only way way in the future. But I disagree that the human brain is too complicated/too perfect to copy.

*Goes to watch the Matrix*

could it happen yes, programming is a limitless thing like the human brain enough time money and dedication and you cna program anythign to do anything, maybe not in 50 years but if the world doenst end in the next 200 then yes it will happen, i say will coz it WILL happen there is no maybe or possibilty about it it willd efiantly happen and some point as long as we dont kill ourselves or have a war and destroy msot of the world.

I agree with Chet, it could easily happen if you look at the way things have progressed over the recent past; but like he said i think 50 years is a bit of a push.

i think like in the beginging of 1990's, when i was a kid there was so much talks about robots, now the only robot ive heard of that exists in the 20th century is asimo i think its from japan or korea but its actually intelligent

i hope i remember correctly lol :)

It would be good to have C-3PO in my home. :D :D

but as I know humans, their first thing were to figure out how they can kill other people with robots :(

You mean YOU are not that smart.

:o oioi

"actions of the characters in the games eventually simulate intelligence, dont they?"

No they dont. They have a number of attributes and a few actions that are chosen theoretically randomly, they dont act intelligently.
