They are in many US airports right now, using a wonderful policy. They're optional...

What that means is you arrive at the airport and have two options...

1 - Go on the full body scan line. Zip through the line, get your blurred-faced, non-recorded image taken and go on your way.

2 - Wait on the non- full body scan line. Get to the metal detector, remove shoes, belt, jacket, sweater, wallet, keys, cell phone, etc. Walk through the metal detector, probably get patted down, possibly get randomly searched / screened, recollect your items and run to make your plane.

I like the option, Anyone who isn't paranoid / obscenely insecure can opt for the body scan, everyone else has to deal with the headache of airport protocol. Only thing I would change would be making those 'probable' pat-downs mandatory for those who choose to avoid the FBS.

I agree, I don't think it should be mandatory, but I do like the option. I really don't foresee them becoming mandatory in the US, people value their privacy too much.

I'm sure little kids would probably get excited or something at the scanner. If a little kid had something on them in the first place, for example a mirror or belt or something (that happened to me before) they'd need to go through the horror of having a stranger pat touch them trying to find it, which the parents probably don't like more then they wouldn't like the scanner. The most you'll get from the kid from the scanner is probably nervous laughter.

I don't care about it, I have no problem being scanned like that, whatever speeds up the process and makes flying easier and faster

If you have issues with your body deal with it, I'm sure these people have as little interest looking at you through a black and white scanner as you do being scanned

As a side note...

I think this 'anti-terrorist on airplane' hysteria is silly. The only reason airplanes were able to be used as giant projectile jet-fuel explosives was it wasn't expected. Prior to 9/11/2001 if a plane was hijacked the norm was a ransom would be demanded, paid, and the plane would be safely landed (part of the negotiations would be that the hijackers would want transportation, usually taking a few hostages to ensure their escape). So on September 11th, this was what was assumed and no one on the planes took action. It wasn't until something happened on board the 4th plane, when via cellular communication a passenger learned of the fate of the other three planes, that the passengers took matters into their own hands and minimized the damage.

So, if a hijacking nowadays occurred, I will guarantee you a terrorist would not be able to use the plane as a missile. This leaves them with one option... blowing the plane up. Well, simply blowing up a plane (sneaking on explosives) does virtually no damage. At most the plane is destroyed and the passengers on board (200, 300) are killed.

Terrorist want to cause terror, and 300 deaths will not cause it. Our government (and homeland security) needs to be thinking one step AHEAD of the terrorist, not one step behind. If the terrorists want to cause terror, what will they do next?

I don't know, but with 300 'policemen' on each flight, I think our planes are pretty safe.
