What makes the beats great is that they're so fucking gritty becuase of the shitty equipment the Wu used to record the album. If they had used great equipment it wouldn't have had the same effect becuase it wouldn't have had that same eerie gritty feel which works so well with the lyrics.

RZA is a genius behind the boards but Only built 4 cuban linx has much better melodies than 36 chambers if you ask me. Ice Cream itself is fucking classic.

I honestly prefer some of the 1990s solo Wu-Tang releases than 36 Chambers but they're all classics really. I love that "Stimulation" stuff on Tical

I know people who hate hiphop, but love this album - personally its one of the only albums I've heard that I'd call perfect

Production-wise, I think OB4CL, Liquid Swords are better, and maybe Ironman & Wu Tang Forever, and rapping wise every member got better as they went on, but there something about this album that makes it so special

"Wu Tang is FOREVER, mothafuckas" - ODB, thats the fucking TRUTH!
Same sword they knight you they gon' good night you with
Sh.., Thats' only half if they like you
That ain't even the half what they might do
Don't believe me, ask Michael
See Martin, see Malcolm
You see Biggie, see Pac, see success and its outcome
See Jesus, see Judas; see Caesar, see Brutus
See success is like suicide
Suicide, it's a suicide
If you succeed, prepare to be crucified

I'll second this, im on my old fucked up laptop right now, so I can't link any of the samples that RZA used on OB4CL, but some of them are just genius - especially the sample for Ice Cream, Ice Water (Bing Crosy - White Christmas) and Verbal Intercourse. The more I think about it, I actually think OB4CL is the best hiphop album ever - 36 Chambers is the greatest though

Honestly I've said it before, but RZA from 1993-1997 was untouchable

When speaking of Ice cream; Ghostface killahs opening verse is legendary!
