I don't think anyone should claim to listen to something he doesn't like or the opposite of that, Hell I even listen to Katy Perry and OneRepublic and I hate Sadistik.
Besides, If you claim to like something you don't like for long you'll end up being comfortable enough to think you're liking it, therefore you're taste will change itself and almost everything you liked in the past will change.
Haha I remember when i claimed that I liked some of Katy Perry's songs, I even got into a stupid argument with Kez because of it.
I agree with you last paragraph to a degree, only because 90 percent of the albums I hold in high esteem are also considered great by general consensus, rarely do I go out of my way to listen to just average albums, or even good ones. I really should though, and that a lot of albums I liked, I just picked out on that dude's list were 4+ star albums. So I can empathize Lello in that he listens to music that others recommend and up liking it rather than bandwagoning, but my taste isn't as sporadic as his, nor did I really stop liking old artists because I discovered "better" ones.
