If I remember right, that's what led to the American Revolution. Britain spent a ton of money funding the war to protect the colonies. They felt that it was fair for them to tax the colonies in order to earn some of that money back...and you know what happened from there.

But America (at least the U.S.A. hasn't been created yet...so I think that's an ok option?)
