This car will give you a real high.
A flying car successfully made its maiden flight in upstate Plattsburgh earlier this month, its Massachusetts-based creators announced yesterday, saying the two-seater is more accurately described as a "roadable aircraft."
When the vehicle, dubbed "Transition," touches down, it takes about 30 seconds to fold its wings up and transform into a front-wheel drive car that can be driven on the road at highway speeds, the company says.
With its wings folded up, it's 6 feet 9 inches high and 80 inches wide and can be parked in a standard household garage. It can be refueled at any regular gas station because it both flies and drives on high-octane unleaded automotive gas.
James Bond couldn't ask for more.
"This breakthrough changes the world of personal mobility. Travel now becomes a hassle-free integrated land-air experience," said Carl Dietrich, CEO of Terrafugia, an aircraft company, which expects it will hit the market in 2011 at a cost of $194,000.
The company's name, Terrafugia, is Latin for "flight from land."
The Transition, which can cruise at more than 115 mph, is categorized as a light sport aircraft, and operators will need a sport pilot license to fly it, as well as a regular driver's license for road travel.
By law, it can take off and land only at an airport.
