Leaks = Marketing Strategy?

Postby Banks » Jul 3rd, '11, 16:24

Someone here has come to think of it? It is a possibility, since the leaks and information about an album, creates a whole hype around it...

Well duh. Artists leaking their own shit to keep buzz alive has been a technique since the internet mystically mutated with music distribution over the years. Look at Lowkey, he's self-released almost half of his forthcoming album already and it has as much underground anticipation as I could possibly imagine for a UK rapper honestly.

This is now the beginning of Satire's solo career as a short break from Mastire and will be the official Ask Satire a Question Thread.

C.R.E.A.M wrote:^^Yo Satire, what do you think of my new thread in Shady Chit-Chat ?

I'm gonna be honest with you C.R.E.A.M. and say it was meh from my point of view. You might actually fool some people with it because of how plausibly retarded it sounded, but it sounded like you forced alot of it and there were alot of filler moments. The only way threads like that can possibly be funny is through exaggeration or sarcasm and the way you exaggerated it just made the reasons just sounded stupid, rather than funny-stupid. You need to be literally over the top if you do shit like this and it has to flow together naturally.

Honestly, threads like that almost never work out unless you have the perfect timing possible and the end result is usually awkward. But then again I don't know if your intention with that was to be funny or to troll people.

Still this is an improvement from my last troll thread which was the Rock Bottom is overrated thread, right ? :sweating:

No that was actually a decent troll tbh. That was great timing.

It's an improvement over everything else though.

That and be a little less over the top with the reasons given since your intention was to deceive people. Your post seemed caught somewhere in between trying to be funny and trying to piss people off and that's why it ended up like that.

And no problem Creamcakes.

Thanks for the question, Jeans Pear, and the answer is no. I consider it more of a condensed review or constructive criticism rather than a full blown lesson.

There's a difference between trolling and purposefully saying something stupid. If all a troll gets in response is a facepalm...

I don't know how some people didn't realize this. Record labels/artists release "snippets" or songs all the time, claiming they "leaked" to garner hype. It's how they assure first week sales with minimal advertisement.

Has anybody else read the Robert Green & 50 Cent collaboration book 'The 50th Law', anyways, it explains that on the streets hustling 50 would give out free samples of capsules to the fiends, and then if it was good, word would spread and he could get feedback and it gave him the edge over the other hustlers.. the point being that he incorperated this into his music as a 'marketing strategy' :y:
Fuck a sig, i go accapella.

But if you're saying something stupid with the purpose of getting a reaction, it is atleast an attempt at trolling.

An artist cant leak his own song. He would just be releasing it for free.

Semantics, semantics. It all boils down to the exact same action, regardless. The second Yelawolf revealed that it was him who released that shitty new single, the term goes from "leak" to "self-release", but that's not the point though.

It's funny. I never said this because I didn't wanna seem like a cocky asshole but I always imagined me and class growing up to be something very similar to Maybe & Block in 5-6 years.

That being said he's essentially me but better.

Class is a close-minded moron, he will never be Block. How dare you insult Block like that?
