Big L was no more appealing to the mainstream than just about any of the artists I listed and was definitely not more successful than any of them and was in the same predicament that several DITC members were in while he was still alive, only once he died did he really start to garner this cult status which can be directly attributed to his untimely death.
Pun was successful while he was alive, you're right and definitely had mainstream appeal, though I honestly believe he'd be lead by Fat Joe today who'd be pulling the strings while piggybacking off the success of The South, his later album pretty much showed he was falling off horribly.
Big was actually kind of similar to Pun in that he was being lead by Puffy who had too much of a hand in crafting LAD which robbed the album of it's full potential and filled it to the brim with filler and awful Jiggy tracks, if there was more direction in the album he could have made it better than R2D seeing as how Big was progressing as an mc. Whereas Pun was in a downwards incline and Big L pretty much remained stagnant.
