You can save the hardrive unless that was what broke originally. Not sure if you know anybody with any computer knowledge but you could probably take it to a shop and have them copy the data to a flash drive.

He could have done a System Recovery, but he doesn't have the CD roms for that. So either try get ahold of those CD roms or......live with the fact you've lost so much
