Valerian is very safe, and the only side effects might be slight drowsiness in the morning. If that's the case, you might consider adjusting whatever dosage you originally went with. Most Health Food stores will carry Valerian extracts, and on the bottles there will generally be a good starting dose. Adjust according to how it affects you.
Since Valerian will most likely be the best bet, I'd go with it, but if you end up trying Kava Kava, there's just a word of advice:
You'll want to make sure that it's Kava Kava root, not leaf. The root is safe, and free of any harmful substance to speak of, but the leaves have been shown to be detrimental to kidney health. Looking on the bottle, it should say in the ingredients specifically if it contains root. If it doesn't say "root", then err on the side of caution and check out a different brand.
