Actually, it was probably to avoid drawing attention to themselves due to an unreasonably high amount of electricity use. When electric companies see abnormally high usage rates, they sometimes report it to the police so they can investigate and confirm whether or not it's a grow operation. The generator would have been better that stealing electricity though.
