Eighth Note......1/4 of a beat


2 eighth notes....each note is 1/4 of a beat

Quarter Note.....it has one beat


Half Note.......it has 2 beats


Whole Note....it has 4 beats


Quarter Rest......one beat of rest(silence)


Half Rest......2 beats of rest (silence)


Whole Rest.....4 beats of rest (silence)


to tell the difference between half and whole rest remember that the half rest is facing up and whole is facing down

If there's a dot next to the note/rest it gives it half of the origional

Ex.

dotted Quarter......gets 1 and a half beats


dotted half........3 beats
