Final Fantasy VII confusion

i didn't think this was really "worthy" of the game section so i'm puttin this here.

now it's been a while since i've played the games but i'm confused about FFVII and Crisis Core.

at the end of Crisis Core Zack tells Cloud to be his living legacy, and thus Cloud essentially assumes the role of first class soldier Zack. but in the middle of FFVII Cloud finds out he wasn't really in soldier and all that mess and he's all surprised n shit. i don't get it

I haven't played FFVII in a long time but I think he assumed the role of Soldier, he was pretending the whole time since Zack died and ended up believing and thinking his charade was real and that he was really in Soldier until he figured out later that he never was....I think it was something like that.
