I'm of the opinion that the student should learn to read music and memorize where all the notes are on the fret board before venturing into tabs. I took the classical training route, beginning on a steel string acoustic and taking formal lessons out of Berklee. I wanted to play rock'n'roll and heavy metal, but I held off until I mastered reading music and the classical guitar technique.
Boy did it pay off. I could play through any tab I wanted.
But then again, it depends on whether you want to play music professionally or just as a hobby.

I play the recorder and I don't usually read these notes. HAHA. I guess it will help pianists or keyboardists.

I find it entertainin to listen to samples and its a way of payin homage, so dont even joke about callin them corny assed. Theres a reason Producers such as RZA, Dre, and DJ Premier all hailed as the greatest.
