Disclaimer: This post/review may end up being pretty long, it all depends on how much I end up writing (obviously).
>>This review probably is not what you want to see, and I know a lot of the dick riders on this forum will call me a hater. Be mature about it, and we can discuss opinions. I'll admit, I will always support Eminem. He brought me into hip hop. That doesn't mean I won't call him out on things he is messing up on.<<
I'll start with what I like about the album.
Shady definitely shows why he is one of the best lyricists in the game at the moment, that is something I don't think anyone can disagree with. Some of the metaphors and punchlines when I first heard them just made me sit back and go "holy shit, how did he think of that?". The way he incorporates the multies has always amazed me. His flow, while it definitely is not the same as his 1999-2004 era, is still pretty good. Delivery is impeccable as always. Those three qualities are what got me into Eminem, and I'm glad he hasn't lost any of those.
I'll go more in-depth in the negative section, but this album definitely has a much more "mainstream" and "commercial" feel/touch to it. Which I am very torn on how I feel about the overall sound. I think it is definitely a lot more "listenable" if that is the right word to use, for the average listener of music in general. Because of this, I think a lot more people will bump this album way more than his previous albums, which in my opinion were better - The Eminem Show, MMLP, and SSLP. Encore was shit, and most of the songs on Relapse I can't stand like most people because of the accent.
Now I'll go into what I hate about this album.
The beats.
While this album may have 1, MAYBE 2, good beats - the rest are all SHIT. If you are a true hip hop fan, and Eminem fan, then you will agree. If you like Drake or Wayne, then you probably won't.
All of these beats are supposed to be on Thank Me Later or some Wayne bullshit. I have been bumping Recovery all week long, today I went back and listened to The Eminem Show, MMLP, and SSLP. I was blown away by the differences at the beats. We lost the Eminem that spit over RAW HIP HOP beats. These beats are all club beats. Take it or leave it, its the fact. Like I said earlier, these beats are the result of him going more "commercial" and "mainstream". The mixed feelings I have are that - I would rather hear Eminem on the radio more. I would rather people praise Eminem for his talent a lot more than people do, or give him the chance he deserves. But...I also don't want a club beat Eminem. But hey, even if its on a club beat - at least he fucking killed every verse. I mean shit - I think its safe to say Wayne's career blew up because of Lollipop and now he is regarded as an amazing rapper. The fuck? How is that a rap song.
I don't feel like there are any songs we can relate to. No Lose Yourself, Sing For The Moment...no song that we can all say "yah man, that is my shit right there." - I expected this, honestly not sure how much more he could rap about that we as fans would feel.
Final
Maybe you guys don't agree, maybe you do and you just don't want to admit it because some dick rider might flame you for it. I don't care. All I ask is that you be mature about your replies, and actually think about it.
Go back and listen to his old material, do it. Don't read this thread, then reply within 2 seconds because oh my fucking god, someone just said something bad about Recovery...must REPLY NOW AND CALL HIM A HATER.
Overall - I like the album, and I respect him as an artist. He is my overall favorite artist, and I probably will never be as interested or supportive of an artist as I have been with Eminem. If not for his immense talent, then for just the way he is.
But better or as good as his old shit? Maybe, if you like club beats. Otherwise, no. Maybe for you guys the beats don't mean much. To me, the beats are an important part of hip hop, just like the flow and delivery.
Edit: added the "or as good as" above ^
