Order of Recovery Tracklist - Any Significance?

Postby MikeNUFC » Jun 17th, '10, 21:56

So, was just thinking about the order of the songs on Recovery and was thinking if there was anything significant about it - all his prefer albums usually have a fantastic story running throughout or are at least ordered in a way that it's easy to see why he choose that order for the tracklist.

I can't work out Recovery's though. The order just seems really random - maybe that's the intention, I dunno.

I think the order works well in terms of the variation changes from track to track. Almost like 'Emotional track then a lyrical onslaught etc" which gives a good comparison and shows his variety in the music. But I couldn't work out a particualar story or significant order.

'Cinderlla Man' and then '25 To Life' was the only one that really made real sense although I thought 'Almost Famous' then '25 To Life' would have worked better, due to the fact it would go from the track that shows his rise to getting signed then the track showing how that has imprisoned him.

EDIT: Oh, and I see the significance of Going Through Changes to Not Afraid. That one makes proper sense.

Anyone have any ideas as to the order?

I thought it would have been better if he would have put 'Not Afraid' first.

it goes not by titles but by content. the first few songs go from his life with drugs and how bad he felt to him overcoming drugs and remembering proof

This is why I think skits are always a decent addition to an album.

skits won't make the order make any more sense than without them. positioning of the skits makes sense for the skits, but placing a skit between one random thought and another won't magically link them.

That makes sense. Not Afraid is sort of like the "turning point" of the album in that concept. Cheers

I think its all about hip-hop. The whole genre, the other artists, and fans. A lot of love tracks in there, and I think its not about any woman, its about hip-hop, other artists, and the fans. The whole rap game.

1. Cold Wind Blows is showing he's on top of his game,
2. Talkin' 2 Myself is about setting the record straight about the past 6 years.
3. On Fire is him saying "Don't Fuck With Me."
4. Won't Back Down is showing why not to fuck with him because of all the crazy punchlines. Not a great song, but sick lyrics.
5. WTP is just a party song and has comedy. So right after the mean side of him, the comedy side of him. Like a Real Slim Shady or Without me. So another way of showing he's back.
6. Going Through Changes is a big turning point in the album. Very personal song about his abscence from music, depression from Proof's death and his drug addiction.
7. Not Afraid is him overcoming those problems.
8. Seduction is about Eminem being back. "She" in the song is hip-hop and "your" in the song are the other artists while he was gone. Listen to it and replace "she" and "your" with hip-hop and other artists and it makes perfect sense. He's taking back the game he left while on top.
9. No Love is almost like a diss song to all the other artists. They get no love for not caring if Em would ever come back to rap again or not. Possibly a different reason, but still sounds like a song aimed at other artists in general.
10. Space Bound is either about his past relationship with hip-hop, or his new found relationship with hip-hop. Meeting it again, falling in love, then Relapse being looked down upon by hip-hop. Not getting any respect from fans, MTV's list, and other artists. And him killing himself at the end (him saying "I don't need you anymore.")
11. Cinderella Man is him feeling like he can do anything. Like he's as strong as he's ever been. And on top of his game again.
12. 25 to Life is hip-hop now wanting him again, and him saying fuck you. "I told you, you'd be sorry if I fucking left, I'd laugh while you wept, hows it feel now, yeah, funny aint it, you neglected me..."
13. So Bad is him rubbing it in the face of hip-hop. Kinda like when you breakup with your girlfriend/boyfriend and have the attitude of "Well its your loss, you'll never find someone like me."

Almost Famous is also about hip-hop, I just don't know how to incorporate it in the storyline I just made up. Love The Way You Lie may also fit because it is another love song. You're Never Over obviously about Proof. Untitled is kind of wrapping up the whole album. Im back, Im going to be here for a while, Here We Go Again...

What do you think?

That actually all makes sense. Except for Almost Famous being in randomly at the end.

I never really thought of Space Bound as being about hip hop to be honest.

25 To Life is pretty obvious, but I never thought of Space Bound like that.

I thought Space Bound was about drugs, it makes sense when you plug it in.

But huge props to the guy who posted that storyline explanation. To the average listener it's 1/2 witty, Slim Shady-esque songs and after NA it's emotional, but that made perfect sense. Props.

Finished and slightly Revised:

1. Cold Wind Blows is Eminem coming back and showing he's on top of his game.
2. Talkin' 2 Myself is about setting the record straight about the past 6 years. Also apologizing to fans.
3. On Fire is him saying "Don't Fuck With Me."
4. Won't Back Down is showing why not to fuck with him because of all the crazy punchlines. Not a great song, but sick lyrics.
5. W.T.P. is just a party song and has comedy.
He's taking back the game he left while on top and letting all the other artists know it.
9. No Love is almost like a diss song to all the other artists. They get no love for not caring if Em would ever come back to rap again or not. Possibly a different reason, but still sounds like a song aimed at other artists in general.
10. Space Bound (Revised) is about him getting back into hip-hop. He is hesitant at first, but he puts his trust in it and comes back. Hip-hop denied him, and he thinks his relationship with rap is over.
14. Almost Famous is him thinking about how he first fell in love with hip-hop. He falls for "her" again.
15. Love The Way You Lie is him saying he's apologizing to hip-hop for leaving. He wants "her" back. But if they ever separate again, he's going to kill her (hip-hop.) Burn the whole house down with her in it.
16. You're Never Over is giving us the reason he came back hungry and just as stong as ever. He's doing it for Proof. Coming back for hip-hop in memory of Proof. "Proof you knew I’d come out of this slump, rise from these ashes, come right back on they asses, and go Mike Tyson on these bastards. And Imma show ‘em, blow ‘em out the water slaughter ‘em homes..."
17. Untitled - I'm back and here to stay this time. Picking up his career where he left it off from The Eminem Show. "Here We Go"... Again.

This may not be 100% accurate, but I think this is basically the storyline of the album. A love story between him and hip-hop.
