Yes he used to be amazing but he's certainly getting back to a certain stature.

He wasn't instantly awesome from the start, he worked at it. In like 97' he was awkward and not entirelyc omfortable too. But by the time he got with Dre he was amazing. So it looked like he was out of the box brilliant but he worked at it.

And now, he hasn't performed properly for years. So he's slowly getting better again. His performance of "Not Afraid" and especially "Renegade" were huge improvements of last year. His "Won't Back Down" on Fallon was great too. He didn't half lip-sync in 02/03 though.

It's just because his actual music started to become more complex. He started layering choruses more, putting more ranges and sounds into them to the point where it was a lot harder to replicate them as good live. But when he was doing The Eminem Show he was live as fuck. That was his peak in every aspect to me. Like this:

Although I definitely think he's lost such a chunk of his rhythm it appears it's gone forever. For example look at him doing "Criminal" here:

There, it looked like he was human elastic. Just 100% comfortable, energetic but also... 'On-point' with every action / movement. Nothing looked awkward and everything looked cool. He doesn't have that anymore in his legs or rhythm, most of it is 'off'.

But am sure he'll get at least good again.

PS. He always had backing tracks, usually due to background noises / voices he'd do. For example on that "Criminal" one. Now that was 00/01 and when 'Ken' comes in and goes 'Amen' you can hear it rise in the background.

It's not lip syncing it's just incase he runs out of breath.
