I also agree with you, though, in that the slower, clearer stuff was great in its own right. I remember during the 2001 Grammys, there was this thing during the coverage where the reporter interviewed U2 about Em, and Bono said something along the lines of "People complain they can't understand what he's saying, but it's not true. You can understand every word he's saying."
Personally, I don't have a preference. I love the SSLP-Recovery stuff, with the slower, clearer flow, and I love the B&E stuff with the rapid, spitfire type delivery. It gives his overall discography even more variety.
