His 97-99 style I think was probably best for these kind of left-field, cartoon violence lines. His wit was so brilliant then though.

A good example of that type of line in more recent times would be in "On Fire"

"Walk up on a homeless man, holdin' a sign sayin'
'Vietnam vet', I'm out my fuckin mind man
Kick over the can, beat his ass and leave him 9 grand"

Yeah, that one is okay, people seem to like that a lot more than I do... well, beating him and leaving him a lot of money is pretty funny... but a lot of those attempts recently are more-so just nonsensical, completely, as in, there's no intrinsic wit to it, it's just a statement.

Where as... "I'm the old man who lives upstairs and starves his pets, who never leaves his house - cause he thinks his car's possessed" is pretty comedically brilliant, but not just babble, I dunno, he's getting there though. And there's lots of glimmers of brilliance.

I think he was trying to tap into his past powers but it doesn't come off as well. It's not as concise or hard hitting, to me at least.

I think that if you would put the same line over a softer, more playful beat, with less intensity in his voice it wouldve actually sounded like vintage shady

Vintage shady's lines weren't as drawn out. The nugget of humor was beating up a homeless guy and leaving him a shitload of money. He tried to make it funnier by adding 'Vietnam vet', but that added an unnecessary bar, and made it sound awkward..coming off as convoluted and 'ehh'.

I think 'Underground' and 'On Fire' are both similar in that he was trying to recapture the vintage sound but missed the mark. Underground has a lot of nonsense that just isn't funny or clever.. and On Fire has a lot of good ideas with poor execution. He probably could have done something with forcing a blind man to color inside the lines that might be funny with better execution.
