Apparently Thriller is MJ's only diamond (actually 29 times platinum) US album?

Bad or Dangerous didn't sell 10 mil in the US? that's surprising...

Because those titles and albums, even though I've never really listened to em, I am well aware of the albums as they've become part of pop culture, and legendary... MJ was like galaxy-big-famous, it's surprising that two of Em's albums sold more than two of his most famous ones (US wise).

As for 'who sold the most records' in the United States, the Beatles and Elvis Presley has sold roughly the same amount (Beatles slightly more albums, and Elvis slightly more singles & EPs), which place them in category of their own (#1). Michael Jackson is #3. If one instead speaks of worldwide sales, Beatles= #1, Elvis Presley= #2, Michael Jackson= #3. Neither of them has sold anywhere near 1 billon though...

There's a misconception that the earlier in time an album was released, the better the music sales were. The reason he out sold those albums is because when MMLP and TES were release, album sales were higher. Albums sales weren't as high in the 70s-80s as they were in the 90s/early 2000s.
Albums sales reached their peak in 2000, when the MMLP was released.



The best selling album in 1992 only sold 4,832,000 copies within it's year, while the best selling album of 2000 sold 9,936,000 copies within it's year. Yearly album sales in the 80s and especially the 70s are actually pretty similar to albums sales in late 2000s, though they weren't as low as they've gotten now. The only difference is sales weren't as front loaded as they are now. Which means that albums didn't debut with big numbers, but instead sold consistently. Which is why most of the biggest open weeks of all time are from late 90s and the 2000s.

I am looking around different sites and the WW sale numbers are all different, some have MJ in the lead, some have Led Zeplin in the lead, some of Elvis in the lead.

No website has official worldwide numbers. They're all estimates since no one officially tracks them. The best people can do is take the available certifications from countries, add them up, and make estimates for the rest. Also, worldwide sales of people like Elvis, Micheal, and the Beatles are often very inflated.
